Peaches

Typically we offer 15 varieties of peaches, available from early July until the middle/end of September.

We sell both first quality peaches and seconds (these have small bruises or bug bites), and you can find them both at the farm or at farmer's markets.

A taste of the offerings from Guenthenspberger Farms

Early peach varieties have great flavor and are semi-cling:  the softer peaches release from the pit more easily. 

Mid and late season varieties are free-stone:  the peach separates competely from the pit. Some of these varieties include:

  • Haven peaches--both Red Haven and Glohaven
  • Several Flamin' Fury varieties
  • One variety of white peach that has a mild flavor and pretty white flesh, available in mid-August. 

 We only pick peaches when they become ripe, not when they're still green like most stores and other local growers, because we sell them directly to you and we don't have to ship them anywhere.

Guenthenspberger Farms sells peaches by the pound or, if your order is large enough, by the bushel (48 pounds) or half bushel (24 pounds).

Ripe peaches do not necessarily mean soft peaches.  If you like your peaches softer, store them in a paper bag on your kitchen counter until they reach your desired firmness, then store them in the refrigerator.  Peaches need to be checked often when stored on the counter; we pick them ripe, so they can soften quickly.

Our growing practices

Many people think that organic farming means "no chemicals" are ever used.  In fact, organic growers can and do use chemicals on their products; however, these chemicals typically are those found in nature (with the exception of copper).  Most organic farms are very small growers located in hot and dry areas where pests naturally are limited.  Growing organic produce here in Indiana simply is not feasible economically on a large scale.  Guenthenspberger Farms uses chemicals only when necessary, and we carefully follow all labeled precautions.  We use only those chemicals approved for the specific pest and crop.  We also take full advantage of integrated pest management technology to reduce the need for insecticides and fungicides.

Without chemicals, the food you take home would be of poor quality and there would be less to take home.  Most organic farms are very small growers located in hot and dry areas where pests are limited anyway.  Growing organic produce here in Indiana is simply not feasible.  Although we recommend that you wash your produce before eating it, the ordinary contaminants you might carry on your hands when you pick the produce (germs, dirt, yucky stuff from your steering wheel) are a greater concern the anything you might find on the fruit.
